Hockney is not a believer in healthy living so much as in good living, which in his view means enjoying life in its fullest sense: experiencing all the beauty of the world around, and concentrating on a task that is completely absorbing. In that respect, he is in accord with the ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus (341-270 BC), who believed that the ideal existence was one devoted to enjoying life’s pleasures, but held that the most enduring of those were simple. He spent his time talking, writing, and thinking in a garden outside Athens.
Aim for enjoying life’s pleasures in 2024. Find tasks and hobbies that are completely absorbing. Don’t forsake responsibility, but don’t forget to live.
Happy New Year!
